  • August Reflections: Have You Done What You Needed This Summer—For Your Soul and Your Fertility Journey?

As the calendar turns to August, there’s also a slight shift in the air. The sun still shines brightly, the days are long, and the sounds of summer linger but there’s also a reminder that this season, like all things, is starting to wind down.

It’s the perfect time to pause, reflect, and ask yourself: Have I done the things I hoped to do this summer? Have you allowed yourself time to slow down, soak up the sun, find calm and peace in nature, dip your toes in the water, or simply just “be” without an agenda?

Maybe your goals were adventurous: travel, try something new, check off a list. Or maybe your goals were quieter and you hoped to rest, reset, and reconnect with yourself or your partner.

Regardless of whatever “summer” means to you, it’s always good to reflect and think about what you did (or didn’t do) and what lies ahead.

    Summer Energy

There’s something profoundly healing about summer. Nature blooms without forcing itself. The days stretch longer, inviting us to just be. There’s more light—literally and metaphorically. Spending time outdoors can be a powerful form of support during a fertility journey. The fresh air, natural light, and calming presence of nature offer a gentle reset for both mind and body. Being in green spaces can help reduce stress, improve mood, and foster mindfulness—key factors that support emotional well-being during times of uncertainty. Whether it’s a walk through the park, sitting under the sun, or simply breathing deeply in nature, these small moments outside can provide clarity, comfort, and a renewed sense of hope.

The summer season can be a chance to breathe. Whether you’re between treatments, taking a purposeful pause, seeking guidance from a therapist,  or diving in full force, summer offers a rare invitation: permission to rest without guilt.

Many people in the fertility space feel like they’re always doing—tracking, planning, injecting, scheduling, hoping, grieving, repeating. But nature reminds us that growth is not always visible, and that everything has its season.

So if you gave yourself a break this summer, good. Rest is not inaction—it’s preparation.

If you stayed “all in,” good. Dedication deserves recognition, too. And perhaps summer’s energy helped you stay hopeful and resilient, even when the process felt overwhelming.

    Summer Goals vs. Fertility Goals

One thing we all have in common is that we love productivity. Even downtime is often measured by accomplishments. But fertility doesn’t respond to all that hustle and bustle. And growth, both physical and emotional, doesn’t follow a checklist.

    Still, it’s worth asking yourself:

    • Did I take care of me this summer?

    • Did I nourish my body and mind?

    • Did I give myself moments of joy that had nothing to do with fertility?

Sometimes the goal is to give into the little things and take a step back. Laugh, sleep in or say yes to ice cream on a Tuesday night. These little things make you feel whole and human. When you’re on a fertility journey, reclaiming those tiny moments becomes powerful and uplifting.

Taking a Break: Permission to Step Back

Many individuals and couples choose to take a break from fertility treatments during the summer. Whether due to travel, finances, emotional exhaustion, or just needing time to regroup, this pause can feel both freeing and scary.

If that was you, you might’ve wrestled with guilt: Am I wasting time? What if I miss my window? Should I be doing more?

But here’s the truth: stepping back isn’t failure. It’s a way of honoring your limits. It’s choosing to trust your body and giving yourself grace. Taking a break doesn’t mean giving up. It means you’re tuning into your emotional needs—something that’s crucial for long-term resilience on this path.

If you used this summer to move forward—whether through treatments, consultations, or trying naturally—you deserve acknowledgment, too. It’s not easy to pursue fertility when the rest of the world seems to be on vacation, attending baby showers, or posting family beach photos.

You may have felt moments of isolation, or like life is happening around you, not with you. Those feelings are real, and valid. But so is your commitment. Your courage to keep going, even when it’s hard, matters. Take a moment to recognize the emotional energy you’ve invested this summer. Progress doesn’t always look like a positive test. Sometimes, it’s advocating for yourself, making a tough decision, or simply showing up to your own life with hope in your heart.

    Moving Forward

As August gives way to fall, it’s natural to think ahead. New routines begin, schedules fill up, and energy shifts. It can be helpful to think about what you want to carry forward from the summer.

You don’t need a grand plan for the fall, just an idea of where you’d like to go. Whether you’re preparing for your next cycle, deciding on next steps, or just continuing to wait and hope—know that you’re not behind or alone.

Also keep in mind that you don’t have to have all the answers. You don’t even have to feel “ready.” Just give yourself space to reflect with kindness. Your fertility journey is not a sprint, and it’s not a test of endurance. It’s a deeply personal path that winds and weaves and asks more of you than it should. And yet, here you are—still showing up.

That matters and so do you. Here’s to whatever summer gave you—and to whatever fall will bring.
